Parable of the Unforgiving Servant 💰

How should we explain God's grace or mercy?

Lyndsie and I have been listening to the apocalyptic gospel podcast on the parables as we create the lessons we share with you all. As we were working on this particular lesson, Lyndsie shared a couple videos by the podcast speaker (linked bellow) on the topic of Grace (in biblical Greek: charis) The video explained how the ancient world viewed grace as something to be paid forward.

🌿 1. Grace or Charis in Greek is like God’s chesed (חֶסֶד)

Chesed is a Hebrew word that means covenant kindness, mercy, or loyal love. It’s the kind of love God shows again and again in Scripture—even when His people don’t deserve it. It is also the kind of mercy God shows to the unforgiving servant in this parable.

Think of it as the grace/mercy God pours out on us:

  • He forgives us when we repent
  • He keeps His promises
  • He stays faithful, even when we fail

Grace/mercy is God’s gift to us.

It comes from His heart of chesed.

In the ancient world, patrons who extended the graces of their mercy on others, also expected that this same grace would be paid forward. Similarly this parable explains how God expects us to show others the same grace & mercy we have received from Him.
