Parable of The Ten Minas

What is a Mina?

Ok I'll admit it. I've read this parable before without knowing the first thing about a mina. In bible times a mina was a unit of weight. One mina was worth about three months' wages for a worker. In the Hebrew Scriptures the mina was counted in shekels (Ezekiel 45:12). Sixty minas made one talent.

Imagine what three months wages is in today's terms? Now multiply that by 60 and you have one talent (parable of the talents). So when we are talking about 10 minas, we are talking loads of money. Probably the equivalent of 3–4 years of full-time pay today...Whoah.

When the master handed each servant a mina, he was trusting them with something very valuable. God entrusts each of us with time, talents, and treasure. He looks to see if we will be faithful with what is His.

Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very small matter, take charge over ten cities. - Luke 19:17
